The Farmer’s Market is one of the best places to visit in the summer. All the fresh produce, smiling faces, and sweet treats. I garden myself but I can’t grow everything I need and sometimes a crop gets taken, (dang rabbits), so I visit the farmers market to stock up. They always have the best selection and the freshest picks.
In season right now is lettuce, asparagus, strawberries, spinach, green onions, radish, broccoli, cabbage, kohl rabi, cauliflower, peas and beets. I recently tried fresh beets. I had not eaten them since I was a child and was forced to eat canned beets, I did not enjoy them. When I was visiting a friend she has baby pickled beets and they were delicious so I wanted to try some steamed fresh beets. I bought some and had her teach me how to cook them. We steamed them for about 20 minutes and ate them with salt, pepper, and butter. Yummy, now I love beets.
Fresh produce makes all the difference, if you do not enjoy a particular vegetable try it again fresh. The best way I have found to cook vegetables is either roasted, steamed, or grilled.
